Course Description: This 8-hour class is an interactive approach to safely managing an excited delirium (ED) event. Attendees will learn how to recognize ED and how to safely handle someone suffering from ED by learning to minimize the risk of injuries to the rescuers and the patient.
To be effective -- Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Rescue, and EMS must train together on the recognition of ED and pre-plan for an intervention. Learn new therapies and protocols which are currently being used successfully on the street by EMS. Specific take downs and techniques for capturing and restraining the patient will be demonstrated and practiced.
Objectives:
- Recognize warning signs for ED
- Learn history of sudden death and the relationship to ED
- Evaluate the current research into the causes of ED
- Develop procedures for investigating arrest related deaths
- Evaluate the benefit of sedation
- Demostrate control and restraint techniques
- Improve report writing skills involving arrest related deaths
- Understand the importance of first responders working together
- Participate in class discussion involving all of the above.
Who should attend: All first responders -- LEO, Fire and EMS
TCLEOSE and CE credit hours will be awarded.
